Feeling your age? by Fiona Horne

In the last couple of weeks many of have been getting that pre-Xmas feeling, the dark nights have definitely drawn in, the temperature has dropped and everything seems just that little bit harder to achieve. As the year comes to an end most of us are looking forward some well-earned rest and relaxation over the Xmas period.

I was in the middle of a bout of November weariness on a cold morning a couple of weeks ago when I had travelled to Cambridgeshire to deliver a food safety course. Setting up my things, I was busy chatting to my client when in bounded a very special lady; 97 year old Norma had signed up for the course as she was a resident of a local sheltered housing scheme and often helped out with cooking food for social occasions at the scheme. Her aim was to achieve her certificate so that she would be allowed to use the bbq next summer.

Like a ray of sunshine she lit up the group, by giving us fantastic stories and examples of how things “used to be”, especially in her service in the RAF during the war. She eagerly participated in all our activities and at the end of the course; she made a point of telling me how much she had enjoyed the day and learned a lot. She left me with a big hug and a kiss, shouting “see you on the next course, if I’m still here!”

As I drove home I couldn’t help feeling that she was the one who had taught me the lesson, being involved in so much and still learning at the grand old age of 97 had kept Norma young, she wasn’t moaning about the cold or the dark nights just looking for the next opportunity to get together with folks and enjoy life. What an inspiration.  When I grow up, I want to be just like Norma, what about you?
